In 2005, he received half the Nobel Prize in Physics for his contribution to'the quantum theory of optical coherence'. He received many awards, including the 1985 Albert A. Michelson Medal from the Franklin Institute, the 1985 Max Born Award from the Optical Society of America, and the 1966 Dannie Heinemann Prize for Mathematical Physics from the American Physical Society. He was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society (1997), an Honorary Member of the Optical Society of America (2008) and served on the Advisory Board of the Max Plank Institute of Light.
